Kids and sports, it’s always a good mix. It may not come out as expected but it’s always a good decision to let your kids engage in sports activities while he/she is young. As we all know, the benefits you can get from sports is astounding. In sports, kids learn the value of sportsmanship, teamwork, accountability and a dozen other positive values. It also bolsters their bodies making them stronger in the process. Quite simply, it’s one of the best growing up activity a kid can participate in these days. But when we try to look at kids these days, there seems to be something wrong.
Modern culture has a very big impact on sports these days. To some, it’s more of a money-making venture than a fun activity. This is very prominent among college and some professional athletes. The fervent “must-win-at-all-costs” attitude greatly affects the younger generation. It gives them a very twisted view of sports which is oftentimes carried to adult life. This unhealthy environment is prevalent in societies worldwide. So how then can we save our kids from absorbing this wrong view of sports?
Parents should remember that they should always be there for their kids. Especially for younger kids, parents play a very important role in helping kids develop good sportsmanship. Simply put, parents should be involved so that the kid can get the most out of sports. You can start with the following:
• Giving positive feedback and emotional support.
• Make sure you are present in some games and talk about the game afterwards.
• Make sure you don’t impose grandiose expectations on your kid.
• Learn the sport your kid is playing and make him/her feel that you support him/her all the way.
• Teach your kid about the pain and proper handling of defeats and disappointments.
• Be an example to your kid by showing proper spectator behavior.
Take note that these things require time and extra effort on the parent’s part. In fact, most parents forget about these things because they think it’s a waste of time and energy. These are the kind of parents who think that playing sports is one way of getting their kids off their hands. You might need some time to get the hang of doing these things. But when you do it properly, you will easily see the effect on your kid. Gone will be your worries that your kid might imbibe the wrong values of sports. And remember, you are not just doing it for today. Rather, this is big investment on your part for your child’s future.
